Working as the assistant to the Division Dean, duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, leading class/course observations and preparing observation reports ensuring compliance with quality standards in teaching and learning, review applicants for adjunct positions at the college and review of course content and scheduling. Course Description

This course is a practical exploration of the basic elements and principles of art and design.  Although the emphasis will be on two-dimensional design, some elements of three-dimensional design will also be introduced.  Combined with Art 110, Fundamentals of Art & Design II, its primary purpose is to establish a foundation for effective communication through the language of visual form.  This will occur through a series of projects that require critical analysis and creative problem solving.  Problems will be addressed through black and white media.

Course Description

The studio art curriculum at Mary Baldwin promotes a process-oriented and creative practice of the language of visual form, where an emphasis is placed upon art making as a thoughtful exploration of ideas. Students learn the following: perceptual skills, analytical and critical competence, and technical skills related to specific media, the importance of process, creative problem solving, various means of artistic conceptualization, and the context of historical and contemporary art.

ART101-60/70 – Art History and Appreciation Part I - lecture/distance learning

Course Description

Presents the history and interpretation of architecture, sculpture, and painting. Begins with prehistoric art and follows the development of western civilization to the present. This course includes the appreciation of art (focusing on methods, materials and concepts in the visual arts and the aesthetic response to a work of art).  This course presents a survey of materials, techniques and interpretation of works of art including: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and photography. 

 

ART102 – Art History and Appreciation Part II (lecture/distance learning)

Course Description

Presents the history and interpretation of architecture, sculpture, and painting. This course includes the appreciation of art (focusing on methods, materials and concepts in the visual arts and the aesthetic response to a work of art) and the history of art from the Renaissance to contemporary times. 

 

ART121 – Drawing I – Studio

Course Description

Art 121 develops basic drawing skills and understanding of visual language through studio

instruction and lecture. The course introduces concepts such as proportion, space/perspective,

tone, and composition as applied to still life, landscape, and the figure. It uses drawing media

such as pencil, charcoal, and ink. It includes field trips and gallery assignments as appropriate.

 

ART132 – Fundamentals of Design II (Designing in 3-D)

Course Description

This course explores the concepts of two- and three-dimensional design and color.  This course will focus on three-dimensional design and students will work in a variety of media, including wood, wire, plaster and found materials.  Students are introduced to historic and contemporary artists working in three dimensional design, sculpture and installation.  Students participate in individual and class critiques, develop visual language while enhancing problem solving skills and participate (as artists, curators and designers) in a class exhibition.

 

Teaching Methodology

Students engage in the critical thinking process through interactive learning and development of comprehensive lesson plans, lectures and presentations in the class room as well as in virtual settings.  Flexible office hours are provided to assist students with demanding coursework. Students implement life skills learning to achieve success.  Rigorous course instruction provides students “hands on” opportunities in activities such as drawing, photography, painting and round table discussions which foster greater appreciation of art and art history.  Teaching responsibilities include:

  • Ensure content level of course materials in exams has been covered in class

Assistant Gallery Director – Sawhill Gallery                                             

 

Sawhill Gallery is a professional gallery located on the campus of James Madison University.  The gallery hosts several professional exhibitions each year including faculty exhibitions, visiting artists, artists in residency as well as annual juried student shows.  The Assistant works directly with the gallery director in all facets of the management including, research, marketing, installations, as well as public relations and openings.  The Assistant is responsible for management of the intern staff including recruitment, scheduling as well as overseeing the website and social media, other advertising and maintaining professional standards.

Graduate Advisor – artWorks Gallery                                                         2009-2010

 

ArtWorks is an entirely student run professional gallery located on the campus of James Madison University. Graduate Advisor responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supervision of gallery exhibitions, maintenance of bank accounts, coordination of artist contracts as well as supervision of gallery directors and interns.  Additional duties included preparation for internship recruitment, advisement, development of class syllabi and grading. 

 

Graduate Assistant - Visual Resource Center                                              2009-2010

 

The Visual Resource Center at JMU is the foundation for the Madison Digital Image Database (MDID).  As a graduate assistant duties include scanning and cataloguing digital images upon request of the VRC director, professors and alumnae.  Duties included creation of an extensive database titled the Kay Arthur Legacy.  This was an intensely detailed effort which includes the transfer of 1000 slide images to digital format, cataloging and synchronization with data system.  Images focus on early 14th and 15th century painting, sculpture and architecture.  Working closely with Ms. Arthur careful attention is given to detail to ensure proper catalog information within MDID requirements.  External resources include working with ArtStor and Getty Images.

 

Graduate Liaison – National Portfolio Review                                               2009-2011

 

The National Portfolio Day Association (NPDA) was created in 1978, solely for the organization and planning of National Portfolio Days. The Association consists of representatives from regionally accredited US colleges and universities that are accredited institutional members of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and Canadian colleges and universities that are members of Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) or that hold NASAD Substantial Equivalency status.  NPDA is the only organization of its kind and the membership represent the highest standard of visual arts education available in the United States and Canada.

 

Travelling to Richmond and Washington, DC, the Graduate Liaison assists in the coordination of marketing materials and registration of potential art students.  The Graduate Liaison meets individually with high school juniors and transfer students reviewing portfolios in painting, drawing, photography, graphic design and sculpture.  The role of the Graduate Liaison is to encourage the development of student work through continuing education in art theory, history and technique.

 

FINE ARTS IN ROCKBRIDGE                                                                   2006-2009

Executive Director 
 

Responsibilities for day-to-day operation of local office and programs.  Including, but not limited to, establishing and maintaining program budgets, providing administrative oversight to program directors, coordinating the performance season, managing publicity, developing marketing strategies and an on-going comprehensive business plan, grant research and application processing.  FAIR facilitated nine artistic programs including FAIR in the Schools, Summer FAIR, FAIR Writers’ Roundtable, Shenandoah Songs, Goshen Outreach, The Rockbridge Community Symphony Orchestra, The Rockbridge Choral Society, The Rockbridge Youth Chorale and the Shenandoah Youth Wind Orchestra.  Additional duties include guiding a mission to ensure access to all persons interested in fine arts education. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, organizing a multilevel, multifaceted summer arts workshop for ages 6 to adult (Children’s Workshop – Rising 1st – 6th grade; Teen/Adult Workshop – Rising 6th grade and up; Musical Theater Workshop – all ages).  Duties include reorganization and development of brochures, performance programs and newsletters; negotiation of employment contracts for skilled visual artists, writers and musicians; organization of special events; grant writing; management of registration forms, confirmations and collection of tuition funds.  Other management duties include facilitating fundraising functions and collaborative programs with other community organizations, website development and overseeing an expanded group of volunteers. 

 

FASHION FLOORS AND CABINETS

DESIGN CONSULTANT

 

A customer service based organization in the business of cabinetry and flooring sales.  The Designers responsibilities include custom design services in the kitchen, bath home remodeling industry utilizing new technology and high quality software.  Additional responsibilities include sales, preparation of proposals via MYOB Business and Accounting Software, written client communication and processing of accounts payable. Careful detail is given in creating designs and floor plans as well as coordination of industry contractors maintaining high quality and professional standards. Proficient in 20/20 Design software.

 

THEATER AT LIME KILN                                                                                  2004-2005

FINANCE AND DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR

 

Responsibilities included grant search and grant writing.  Management of all accounts receivable and accounts payable including payroll.  Management of non-profit annual audit reviews, actors and performers contracts including Actors Equity Association and Screen Actors Guild.  Coordination of seasonal events and ticket sales.  Budget preparation and analysis. Additional responsibilities included community out reach programs including extensive children’s programming and fundraising.

 

ADVANTAGE REALTY MANAGEMENT GROUP, INC.                                       1991-2004

Supervised a dynamic staff in the operation of a full service property management company.  The agency focused on leasing, managing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budget preparation and contract enforcement.  The agency also supervised independent contractor agreements on behalf of clients.  Staff members and agents were provided with extensive training in the real estate industry including state credentialing, supervisory training, mentoring opportunities, personal enrichment and community outreach. The agency managed multiple properties with contracts surpassing over 300 million dollars in residential and commercial real estate totaling over 500 residential units and office space and over 100,000 square feet of commercial real estate.

  • A professionally run model operation set up as a profit center, charging for our services.

INTERNATIONAL AND STUDY ABROAD

 

In the age of globalization and intimate understanding of diverse cultures is a valuable academic asset not to mention a wholly enriching personal experience. 

 

Travelling with Mary Baldwin students, and as an independent researcher, I have been able to provide leadership and support for a dynamic group of young women and men as part of the Studies Abroad Program travelling from the U.S. to El Salvador.  Students have the opportunity to experience the many layers of Salvadoran culture and history.  Students attend meetings with civic leaders as well a youth groups provide a crucial view of emerging cultures in the United States and abroad. Visiting museums in the city and rural communities offers a wide range of educational opportunities in aesthetics, economics and cultural diversity.  Working side by side with children, youth and adults in art classes, music and language classes, students learn of the challenges and triumphs of other cultures, an experience that building integrity and foresight well into the future.

 

As a volunteer with Eye Care International, I had the opportunity to work with many others from across the nation. Founded by Dr. William Brinker in 1995, Eye Care International provides ophthalmology, optometry, and optical services to areas of El Salvador outside of metropolitan centers. Each year 5,000 patients may receive eyeglasses or undergo surgery for cataracts or pterygium removal or be fitted with an artificial eye.
